Pack the items for safe transportation and head over to the City of Los Angeles, Permanent Collection Center. The Center is open every Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Hyperion Treatment Plant, 7660 West Imperial Hwy., Gate B, Playa Del Rey. Los Angeles County sponsors HHW Collections Events. A Collection Event is a one -day, drive-through event where residents are invited to drive in to a specific location to drop off their hazardous waste. The El Segundo event is held each November at Raytheon Corporation, Parking Lot “G” Hughes Way off Sepulveda Blvd from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. For Small Businesses:
Some small businesses may qualify to dispose of HHW at a City of Los Angeles, S.A.F.E. Center. Consult with the El Segundo CUPA to determine if you qualify prior to calling the City of LA Sanitation Dept at (213) 485-2260 to make an appointment for the 3rd Wednesday of every month.

It is illegal to dispose of hazardous waste in the garbage, down storm drains, or onto the ground.

A waste is a material that is discarded (relinquished, recycled, inherently waste-like, poses a health or environmental threat) a hazardous waste if it is a listed waste, characteristic waste, used oil and mixed wastes. Specific procedures determine how waste is identified, classified, listed, and delisted.

Hazardous waste may be liquid, solid, compressed gases, or sludge. The waste may be by-products of manufacturing processes or simply unwanted commercial products. If the waste has any of these four characteristics, then it is considered to be hazardous:

• Ignitability
• Reactivity
• Corrosivity
• Toxicity

Any solid, semi-solid or liquid waste generated from a wastewater treatment system, water supply treatment or air pollution control unit.

• CalARP: at least once every (3) three years
• Aboveground Petroleum Storage Tank (APSA/AST): at least once every (3) three years
• Hazardous Waste: at least once every (3) three years
• Hazardous Materials Business Plan (HMPB): at least once every (3) three years
• Underground Storage Tank (UST): at least once every year (annually).
