Inspections

The El Segundo Fire Department is committed to improving public safety through the enforcement of building standards relating to fire and panic safety as adopted by the California Building Standards Commission and any other regulations that have been formally adopted by the City of El Segundo for the prevention of fire or the protection of life and property against fire or panic safety issues. The frequency of inspections are based on type of building and are listed below:

Commercial buildings and industrial sites are inspected annually by Fire Prevention and Suppression staff.

New Software

The El Segundo Fire Department has upgraded its Fire Prevention software platform from Streamline/Fire Recovery to OpenGov.

This transition better aligns Fire Prevention operations with other City software systems and improves efficiency for inspections, invoicing, and customer service.

Please note the following: Outstanding balances from previous fire inspections may continue to be paid through Fire Recovery until those invoices are resolved. New inspections going forward will be managed through OpenGov. New invoices will be issued directly by the City of El Segundo and delivered via email.

Online payments for new invoices will be processed through Stripe, the City's secure online payment platform. Invoices will look different than in previous years and will be sent directly from the City of El Segundo. Please review all correspondence carefully to ensure invoices are received and processed in a timely manner. Property owners and managers will be able to access and view fire inspection reports online through the OpenGov portal by creating a secure account.

Access to your records will be limited to authorized users associated with your account. No action is required at this time. If you receive a new inspection invoice after the transition, please follow the payment instructions included in the email. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we implement this upgraded system.

Facilities that handle, store, or use hazardous materials should be inspected for compliance with applicable provisions of the California Fire Code. Facilities that have hazardous materials that exceed reporting quantities are inspected once every three years by the Environmental Safety Division for compliance with Hazardous Material Business Plan program elements of the Health and Safety Code Chapter 6.95 and California Code of Regulations, Title 19 requirements. Fire Department Operational Permits

The California Fire Code identifies specific hazardous operations that require a Fire Department Operational Permit. During the annual fire inspection, the need for an Operational Permit will be identified and fire department staff will issue the permit during the annual inspection.

When a special event is applied for, the Fire Department may require an Operational Permit for hazardous operations, including storage and use of flammable and combustible liquids for generators with a tank capacity of 60 gallons or more, public assembly, pyrotechnic activities, tents and temporary membrane structures. These Operational Permits are issued during the special event application and approval process.
